Thomas Gruber

Originally from Hickory, NC, Thomas spent his childhood in Cleveland, Ohio. He began his study of art and architecture at North Carolina State University and obtained his architecture agree from Texas A&M University. After graduation he joined RTKL Associates in Baltimore – and architectural and planning firm with an international practice. In the mid-80s he moved to Florida where he was the Director of the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office. Gruber was responsible for large scale commercial and mixed-use projects in the USA, Europe and South America.
In the early 90s, he and his wife, Bethy, moved to Blowing Rock, NC where he continued his architectural practice as a sole proprietor. At this time, Thomas developed an interest in watercolor painting. His paintings have been sold in galleries in New York, Cleveland and Blowing Rock.
In the 2000s, he and his wife moved to Cary, NC. At about this time he began to take a serious interest in photography. He has participated in photography workshops sponsored by the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, Arizona Highways Magazine, Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite, the Cortona Center of Photography and
The Third Eye workshops with Robin Davis.
Artist's Statement
I have tried to fuse my 40 plus years of architectural experience with the medium of watercolor and photography. Each painting and photograph are an experiment and adventure with the objective to communicate the feeling of a particular place or scene.
